Any unit with original smoke detectors should replace them. These wired detectors were installed in 2004-2005 and are past their useful life. The first, second, and third floor units have two wired detectors - these are located in the main hallway near the unit entrance and outside the master bedroom. The fourth floor has three with the third being upstairs. Please note that these detectors are wired using a 3-pin wiring harness to connect.

Here is a suitable replacement smoke detector (available at Amazon or Lowes):

Here are the steps to replace an original/outdated smoke alarm:
- Twist the old detector and pull downward.
- Disconnect the wiring harness carefully.
- The old detector bracket is removed by simply loosening (not removing) the two screws securing the bracket to the ceiling. Turn the bracket once loose and pull down.
- The new bracket is installed reversing the steps above. Do not overtighten the screws.
- Remove any plastic from the battery compartment of the new smoke detector. Plug it in and then push up and twist into the locked position.
Please note:
- If your wired detectors have been replaced with non-wired detectors (e.g., by you or your rental management company) it is a violation and will be discovered during the upcoming annual fire inspection.
- Additional nonwired (battery-powered) smoke detectors may have been installed in your unit (e.g., in the bedrooms). Such detectors are unrelated to the wired detectors.
